A handcrafted mosaic reproduction of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889), set to a square rather than the painting’s original landscape format. Squaring it changes the emphasis: the cypress and the village compress, and the turbulent sky takes the centre of the composition.
Van Gogh’s short directional strokes translate unusually well into tile, because a mosaic is also built from short directional pieces — the courses can follow the brushwork rather than cut across it.
